Month-long activities for Dr. Jagan
death/birth anniversaries -
February
27, 2004
In observance of the death
and birth anniversaries of late President, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, a number of activities
are slated to come off next month, as Government and the People's Progressive
Party remember their fallen leader.
During a post-Cabinet press briefing today, Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon
said the main event for the month's observances will be a memorial service at
the Babu John, Corentyne cemetery on
March 5.
Prior to that activity, the youth arm of the PPP will stage a night of reflection
at the party's Georgetown headquarters, Freedom House, on March 4th.
Other activities planned for the month include a lecture series the Cheddi Jagan
Research Centre, under the topic, "Aspects of life and work of Dr. Jagan."
Guyana's Ambassador to the Republic of Venezuela, Dr. Odeen Ishmael is earmarked
to be the feature speaker at that forum.
During the latter half of March, the women's arm of the PPP, the Women's Progressive
Organisation, will put on a public activity, while overseas chapters of the
party are also scheduled to hold commemorative activities.
Meanwhile, to crown the month-long activities, a family fun day will be held
at State House on March 21, 2004.
Dr. Jagan died on March 6, 1997, after a period of illness and hospitalisation
at the Walter Reed Medical Center in the United States. He is regarded by many
as a true Statesman.
