PPP May Day Message
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) wishes to salute the Guyanese and the international workers on May Day 2008. Workers Day.
The Guyanese working class has much to celebrate. The rights o workers have been respected and up-held by the PPP/Civic government.
It is clear that by its actions this administration has demonstrated it working class sympathies.
At this time when food prices throughout the world have sky rocketed, the government has taken bold steps to ameliorate its impact on the Guyanese people.
The authorities have removed all taxes from diesel, the main fuel used in the production process, including industrial transportation, taxes on gasoline have been sharply cut. The government has also been doing much work to ensure that we generate cheaper electricity through the conversion of many diesel sets to heavy fuel.
At the same time much work is being done to develop renewable energy sources.
Basic foot items have also been zero rated in an effort reduce cost of living.
The PPP/Civic government has also taken the initiative to cushion the vulnerable in the society. Single parents are being considered for some special treatment to deal with this situation, which has its roots outside of our society.
At this time the labour movement is divided. This division was due to the fact that the TUC remains locked into the past when large democratic unions were kept out its executive.
While the society has been going through profound democratic changes the TUC rules still remains undemocratic.
The unity of the movement is important for the working people. However it will only be lasting if it is rooted in democracy.
We sincerely hope that the movement will overcome this problem and move from strength to strength.
The PPP once again salute workers everywhere. A Happy May Day to all!
