PRESS STATEMENT The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will be celebrating in the month of March, the life and work of the late President, Dr Cheddi Jagan in observance of his 11 th death anniversary. This year’s observance will be held under a recurring theme: “Cheddi Jagan’s Vision, Our Living Guide.” Dr Jagan died on March 6, 1997 while serving as President. Throughout his life Dr Jagan exerted himself in fighting to liberate the Guyanese people. He was the principal figure in the anti-colonial movement. After independence Dr Jagan fought tenaciously to restore democracy in Guyana. That was achieved in October 1992. PPP Groups countrywide, including the Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) and the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) will be hosting a variety of activities. These activities will reflect Dr Jagan’s relentless struggle and unwavering contribution to the development of Guyana. Overseas groups are also slated pull-off events. The month of observance activities will begin with the Annual Tribute and Wreath Laying Ceremony, on Sunday, March 2, at the Babu John crematorium, Port Mourant, East Berbice, Corentyne. President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Cde Donald Ramotar and Former President Janet Jagan will deliver remarks at this event which entails cultural performances. Party leaders will officiate at these planned activities throughout the month of March. The distribution of prizes to winners of the Cheddi Jagan Essay competition will also coincide with Annual Lecture. February 26, 2008
