Officials from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs comprising Permanent Secretary Nigel Dharamlall and Principal Regional Development Officer Anil Roberts on February 15, visited Namless in Region Three where they met with residents to listen to their concerns and address pertinent issues.

Permanent Secretary Dharamlall speaking with residents highlighted the emphasis placed on the development of Amerindians in the country by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration.
He stated that every Amerindian, irrespective of who they are and where they live is important and that Government will continue to work towards the improvement of their lives.
He referred to the advancement made by Amerindians in Guyana, which though significant, still has a far way to go; hence it is imperative that they have equal access to the opportunities that are being made available by Government.

He noted that the establishment of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and the Amerindian Act are two steps in this direction which have contributed significantly to betterment in the lives of Amerindians.
The Permanent Secretary also informed residents about the ongoing truancy campaign being conducted by the Ministry of Education as he encouraged parents to ensure that their children attend school.
To assist parents, the team presented uniform materials and other supplies to the residents and sports equipment and games to the school.
Some of the issues of concern to residents are flooding during the rainy season and unemployment.
The PS, while noting their concerns, encouraged them to apply for houselots since they currently occupy privately owned land. He however, committed the Ministry’s assistance in providing gardening tools, books and sewing machines to aid in the development of their community.
